How to Retry Failed File Copies Without Starting Over

A long transfer interrupted by a bad USB connection, a dropped network share, or a full disk shouldn't mean starting from scratch. TeraCopy tracks the status of every file individually, so you can retry only the ones that failed, were skipped, or didn't finish - leaving successfully copied files untouched.

Retry using the file status badges

After a transfer, TeraCopy shows status badges in the result bar - for example, Failed: 2 or Copied: 7. Click a badge to mark all files in that category for processing, then start the operation again.

Badge When to use it
Added Resume an interrupted copy - these files were queued but never started.
Skipped Retry files that TeraCopy skipped automatically during an unattended transfer.
Failed Retry files that errored out after you've fixed the underlying problem (e.g. freed up disk space, reconnected a drive).

Select the badge, then click Copy or Move to process just those files.

Auto-resume on network and USB disconnections

If a network share or USB drive disconnects mid-transfer, TeraCopy does not immediately fail the operation - it waits and automatically resumes copying once the connection is restored. You don't need to do anything; just reconnect the drive or wait for the network to recover.

Frequently asked questions

Will retrying overwrite files that already copied successfully?

No. Only the files matching the badge you selected will be processed. Files that completed successfully keep their existing status and are not touched.

What if the error keeps happening?

Check the file list for the error message reported by Windows - it usually indicates whether the problem is a permissions issue, a full disk, a bad file name, or a hardware fault.
